Survival Skills workshops

CFESC Survival Skills Workshops educate, equip, and empower local youth, men, and women on the fundamentals of independent living. Citizens of the City of Orange and surrounding areas are educated about important real-world topics, such as Money Management, College/Job Readiness, Employment Opportunities, Social and Family Help, Community Resources, Assertiveness and Self Advocacy Skills, Legal Rights, Nutrition and Health Education, and Coping with Crisis. The four Survival Skills workshops are for youth, men, woman and workplace. Each of the workshops will be supplemented by four labs that may include such topics as: Sexually Transmitted Infections, Job Training, Drug Prevention, Etiquette, Automotive, and more. The workshops and labs in a 12 week program serve to build self-esteem and positive attitudes as participants learn techniques for succeeding and regaining control of their lives.

Sample workshop components and outcomes are listed below:

  • Respecting Self and Others: Promotes esteem building and respect by providing participants the opportunity to set their own team rules.
• Planning and Reaching Goals: Focus is on values, decisions, and goals.
• Communicating with Others: Targets communication as the art of relating to people through spoken and unspoken word.
• Advancing: Work and School: Shows the importance of working or attending school to advance personal goals.
• Understanding Legal Rights & Responsibilities: Addresses skills to prevent and solve legal problems in key areas: living arrangements, education, school, employment rights, dating violence, and the criminal justice system
• Getting Ready for Employment: Identify and evaluate their own barriers to advancement to focus skills on finding a job and getting a job.
• Keeping a Job: Learn important skills needed to keep a job.
• Managing Money: Focus on planning and prioritizing as the keys to good money management.
• Taking Care of Our Health: Explore the short and long-term effects of health habits, take responsibility for their health, nutrition facts, and more.
• Celebrating Success: Final workshop incorporates activities that summarize skills learned in the entire program.
